How to get involved
BELOVED BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST!
We turn to you with a heartfelt request for your prayerful and material support in the construction of an Orthodox church in honor of Saint Spyridon of Trimythous on the island of Madeira.
The Orthodox Parish of Saint Spyridon has been active on Madeira since 2006. For the past three
years, the community has celebrated Divine Services regularly every Sunday. To this day, the parish does not have its own church building and remains the only Orthodox community on the island, uniting faithful of various nationalities. Canonically, it belongs to the Western European Exarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church.
In 2024, the parish was officially registered in Portugal as a religious non-profit organization. A
dedicated bank account for the organized collection of donations was opened in January 2026. At present, we are raising funds for the purchase of a land plot for the future construction of the church and a parish house.
The construction of an Orthodox church on Madeira is of particular significance. Amid the vast
expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, on the western frontiers of Europe, the church will become a spiritual beacon of Orthodoxy — a place of prayer for the island’s residents and its many visitors, a living testimony to the presence of the Church of Christ where the need for a spiritual home is especially felt.
The building of a church is a common work of the whole Church, accomplished through the love and sacrifice of the faithful. As Holy Scripture says:
“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God
loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
We humbly ask you to take part in the fundraising effort for the purchase of land for the future church.
Even a small contribution becomes part of the great work of building the House of God.

With love in the Lord, Priest Pavel Sergeev
