Parish History
The Orthodox Parish of Saint Spyridon of Trimythous on the island of Madeira was founded on December 25, 2006 — the feast day of Saint Spyridon.
On that day, the first founding assembly of the Orthodox community took place, and the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated.
For a long time, services were held irregularly — once every few months, depending on visiting clergy.
The Catholic Church provided the Chapel of Saint Catherine in Santa Catarina Park in Funchal — the oldest Christian church on the island.
In recent years, parish life has become significantly more active. Services are now held regularly on Saturdays and Sundays.
Metropolitan Nestor visited the parish twice and consecrated the site for the construction of an Orthodox chapel in Prazeres. Bishop Peter has also made multiple archpastoral visits.
In 2025, the parish was registered as a legal entity — Paróquia do São Espiridão na Madeira.
